During the day, downtown Louisville functions as the governmental, commercial and legal hub of Jefferson County. Thousands of people commute downtown to work at law firms, banks, hospitals, insurance companies and in municipal offices. When work ends, many of those people get in cars and return home to far-flung suburbs. However, more and more, people are calling downtown home, taking up residence in sleek luxury condos and high-rise apartments, thanks to recent redevelopment.
Downtown is also the subject of many urban renewal and historic preservation efforts, many of which, paid off including the city’s Waterfront Park, KFC Yum! Center and Fourth Street Live! and South Broadway corridor. Louisville’s cultural arts scene thrives downtown at places such as the Kentucky Center for Performing Arts, Actors Theater, Mercury Ballroom, and Museum Row.
