Neighborhood: Smoketown & Shelby Park

Smoketown and Shelby Park are contiguous neighborhoods immediately southeast of Louisville’s central business district. While the brick-making days of Smoketown are long gone, bricks are literally being taken down and rebuilt, as the neighborhood welcomes new, mixed-income housing and demolishes the old, deteriorating Sheppard Square housing project.

Nearby, Shelby Park is also benefiting from similar revitalization efforts. Neighborhood architecture features ornate brick and frame homes. The centerpiece of the neighborhood is the Frederick Law Olmsted-designed Shelby Park a 16-acre park with many walking paths, ball fields and picnic areas. Other anchor assets The Park, a co-working space on Shelby Street; St. Vincent de Paul; and Argo and Sons Coffee Roasters.
