Mayor Greg Fischer joined local leaders and business owners in an early kickoff for National Manufacturing Month.
Manufacturing is a major economic driver for the Louisville area, with 1,400 manufacturing companies employing approximately 83,000 people, representing 13 percent of the regional employment. Earlier this year, Forbes magazine ranked Louisville as the No. 1 city for manufacturing in the U.S.
In recognition of Manufacturing Month, KentuckianaWorks, the Kentucky Manufacturing Career Center Employer Advisory Group and Junior Achievement of Kentuckiana are teaming up to give area students a first look into manufacturing plants and the day-to-day tasks and activities – in an effort to expose them to potential careers in manufacturing and create a pipeline of highly skilled employees to fill good-paying jobs.
“We know that creating a pipeline of highly skilled workers is essential for a city to be competitive,” said the Mayor. “That’s why I’m happy that we’re working with our partner organizations to give local students the opportunity to get first-hand experience in Louisville’s diversified and strong manufacturing sector.”
Mayor Fischer will join students from Doss High School on October 19 to job shadow workers at Paradise Tomato Kitchen.
Other students will tour GE Appliances, KCC Manufacturing and Clariant Corporation during October to learn more about careers in manufacturing and to gather information about training and educational opportunities.
